Ceci n’est pas Magritte

"This période vache could not subsequently be transformed into a style. Barely a few weeks after the opening of the show, Magritte used the excuse of his wife’s supposedly negative reaction to bring the adventure to an end. “I would quite like to continue with the ‘approach’ I experimented with in Paris, and take it further. That’s my tendency: one of slow suicide. But there’s Georgette and my familiar disgust with being ‘sincere’. Georgette prefers the well-made painting of ‘yesteryear’, so particularly to please Georgette in future I’m going to show the painting of yesteryear. I’ll find a way to slip in a great big incongruity from time to time.”

Espiritismo

the girl beyond the sun

there’s a girl beyond the sun with beautiful blue eyes
sitting in a star barefoot playing the guitar
singing very gently
there’s a girl that sings beyond the sun
sings very gently and we can’t hear her and we can’t see her
because she is beyond the sun
there’s a girl that’s hidden from us by the light beyond the sun
and she sings gently to us and her bare feet and her blue eyes long for the sea
one day by the sea maybe we all meet we and the little girl from beyond the sun
then we will all sing together and the whales will also join

Be nice

1. Be nice
Simple enough advice, but we rarely think of it in terms of memories that linger after we're gone. No matter what you accomplish, how you treat people has a lot to do with how you will be remembered.

Even if you don't want to bother with how you're going to be remembered, being nice is always good for you and the environment !

Cities

Urban society may seem a modern phenomenon but cities have been around for a lot longer than one might think. Indeed, once nomadic tribes began to settle in one location, they saw that it was good, became fruitful, and multiplied. Decades, centuries and millennia passed while war, climate change and human migration all took their toll. Relatively few ancient cities have managed to survive the test of time. Here are 10 that have not only survived, but continue to thrive.

It is true : cities promote civilization, but over 300.000 inhabitants sustainability becomes an issue...

Caritas in veritate

"The global market has stimulated first and foremost, on the part of rich countries, a search for areas in which to outsource production at low cost with a view to reducing the prices of many goods, increasing purchasing power and thus accelerating the rate of development in terms of greater availability of consumer goods for the domestic market. Consequently, the market has prompted new forms of competition between States as they seek to attract foreign businesses to set up production centres, by means of a variety of instruments, including favourable fiscal regimes and deregulation of the labour market. These processes have led to a downsizing of social security systems as the price to be paid for seeking greater competitive advantage in the global market, with consequent grave danger for the rights of workers, for fundamental human rights and for the solidarity associated with the traditional forms of the social State. Systems of social security can lose the capacity to carry out their task, both in emerging countries and in those that were among the earliest to develop, as well as in poor countries. Here budgetary policies, with cuts in social spending often made under pressure from international financial institutions, can leave citizens powerless in the face of old and new risks; such powerlessness is increased by the lack of effective protection on the part of workers' associations. Through the combination of social and economic change, trade union organizations experience greater difficulty in carrying out their task of representing the interests of workers, partly because Governments, for reasons of economic utility, often limit the freedom or the negotiating capacity of labour unions. Hence traditional networks of solidarity have more and more obstacles to overcome."

Isto para mim foi uma surpresa...

Leonard Cohen speaks

Have the women in your life been a source of your strength or weakness?

LC: Good question. It's not a level playing ground for either of us, for either the man or the woman. This is the most challenging activity that humans get into, which is love. You know, where we have the sense that we can't live without love. That life has very little meaning without love. So we're invited into this arena which is a very dangerous arena, where the possibilities of humiliation and failure are ample. So there's no fixed lesson that one can learn, because the heart is always opening and closing, it's always softening and hardening. We're always experiencing joy or sadness. But there are lots of people who've closed down. And there are times in one's life when one has to close down just to regroup.

Are there times when you've lamented the power that women have had over you?

LC: I never looked at it that way. There's times when I've lamented, there's times when I've rejoiced, there's times when I've been deeply indifferent. You run through the whole gamut of experience. And most people have a woman in their heart, most men have a woman in their heart and most women have a man in their heart. There are people that don't. But most of us cherish some sort of dream of surrender. But these are dreams and sometimes they're defeated and sometimes they're manifested.
Do you think love is empowering?

LC: It's a ferocious activity, where you experience defeat and you experience acceptance and you experience exultation. And the affixed idea about it will definitely cause you a great deal of suffering. If you have the feeling that it's going to be an easy ride, you're going to be disappointed. If you have a feeling that it's going to be hell all the way, you may be surprised.

Fermosa e não segura

Descalça vai para a fonte
Leonor pela verdura;
vai fermosa e não segura.

Leva na cabeça o pote,
o testo nas mãos de prata,
cinta de fina escarlata,
sainho de chamelote;
traz a vasquinha de cote,
mais branca que a neve pura;
vai fermosa e não segura.

Descobre a touca a garganta,
cabelos de ouro o trançado,
fita de cor de encarnado…
Tão linda que o mundo espanta.
Chove nela graça tanta,
que dá graça à fermosura;
vai fermosa e não segura

Identidade

"...murderous identities are born of humiliation. Thus, if we want to address the problem of ethnically or religiously motivated violence, we must work to counter the conditions under which people are humiliated or denigrated for being part of some ethnic or religious or national group."
Amin Maalouf

Somos pessoas.

full moon night

it's a full moon rising and there's michael jackson memorial cerimony on tv and I look at the moon and am thrilled...

years ago it looked like fred astaire was back, brighter, more talented, blacker but more important than anything younger...a lot younger, he would do shorter things, with less plot but our atentations spans were shorter already then and the glitter was all there

and I remember there was gloom after the Vietnam defeat and Watergate, people started to cheer on the bicentenary year but they started to sing and dance with mj and so america was great again, the land where dreams come true and while mj was king an iron curtain come down, Mandela was free man at last and pop stars were friends with politicians and raised money to feed the starving

dreams are all that matter, you can be black, you can be white, in fact you can morph into every living human being - if you have the talent dreams will come true and all over the world, no matter faith or politics, people believed you

but you dreamed of peter pan and of eternal youth and you tried to live in neverland, little america come to get you and get you it did, so you were left only with the dreams, people dream of you and that's where you live now

Carnival

James Ensor (1860–1949) was a major figure in the Belgian avant-garde of the late nineteenth century and an important precursor to the development of Expressionism in the early twentieth. In both respects he has influenced generations of later artists. This exhibition presents approximately 120 works, examining Ensor's contribution to modernity, his innovative and allegorical use of light, his prominent use of satire, his deep interest in carnival and performance, and his own self-fashioning and use of masking, travesty, and role-playing.

The character 無 in cursive script. See also an animation showing the stroke order for calligraphy.
The character 無 in seal script.Mu (Japanese/Korean), and Wu (Chinese traditional: 無, simplified: 无 pinyin: wú Jyutping: mou2) is a word which has been roughly translated as "no", "none", "null", "without", "no meaning". While used in Japanese and Chinese mainly as a prefix to imply the absence of something (e.g., 無線/无线 musen/wúxiàn for "wireless"), in English it is more famously used as a response to certain koans and other questions in Zen Buddhism, intending to indicate that the question itself was wrong.

The Mu koan is as follows: A monk asked Zhaozhou, a Chinese Zen master (known as Jōshū in Japanese): "Has a dog Buddha-nature or not?", Zhaozhou answered: "Wú" (in Japanese, Mu).

Some earlier Buddhist thinkers had maintained that creatures such as dogs did have the Buddha-nature; others, that they did not. Therefore, to answer "no" is to deny their wisdom, whereas to say "yes" would appear to blindly follow their teachings. Zhaozhou's answer has subsequently been interpreted to mean that all such categorical thinking is in fact a delusion. In other words, yes and no are both right and wrong. This Koan is traditionally used by students of the Rinzai school of Zen as their initiation into Zen study.

by: e.e. cummings

it may not always be so;and i say
that if your lips, which i have loved, should touch
another's,and your dear strong fingers clutch
his heart,as mine in time not fara away;
if on another's face your sweet hair lay
in such a silence as i know,or such
great writhing words as,uttering overmuch,
stand helplessly before the spirit at bay;

if this should be,i say if this should be--
you of my heart,send me a little word;
that i may go unto him,and take his hands,
saying,Accept all happiness from me.
Then shall i turn my face, and hear one bird
sing terribly afar in the lost lands.

Bom dia

Mudar a vida

Fruitarianism

Fruitarians (or fructarians) eat in principle only the fruit of plants.

Some people whose diet is not 100% fruit, consider themselves fruitarian, if their diet is 75% or more fruit.

Fruitarian definition of fruit
When discussing food, the term "fruit" usually refers to just those plant fruits that are sweet and fleshy (for example, plums, apples, and oranges). Botanically, though, some foods not typically considered fruits—including bell peppers, tomatoes, cucumbers, nuts and grains—are fruits.

Fruitarians use differing definitions of what is considered a "fruit."

Definition of fruitarian
Some fruitarians will eat only what falls (or would fall) naturally from a plant, that is: foods that can be harvested without killing the plant. These foods consist primarily of culinary fruits, nuts, and seeds. Some do not eat grains, believing it is unnatural to do so, and some fruitarians feel that it is improper for humans to eat seeds. Others believe they should eat only plants that spread seeds when the plant is eaten. Others eat seeds and some cooked foods.

Some fruitarians use the botanical definitions of fruits and consume pulses, such as many beans and peas, while others include green leafy vegetables and/or root vegetables in their diet.

Motivation
Some fruitarians believe fruitarianism was the original diet of mankind in the form of Adam and Eve based on Genesis 1:29.[8] They believe that a return to an Eden-like paradise will require simple living and a holistic approach to health and diet. Some fruitarians wish to avoid killing in all its forms, including plants.

Some fruitarians say that eating some types of fruit does the parent plant a favor and that fleshy fruit has evolved to be eaten by animals, to achieve seed dispersal.
From the Wikipedia

In his formative years in England, Ghandi was in contact with the fruitarians. In a way they must have helped him to develop his world vision.
George Bernard Shaw and the Fabians also cherished these ideas.

Nascemos

Nascemos.

Dawn enters

The Garret
by Ezra Pound

Come let us pity those who are better off than we are.
Come, my friend, and remember
that the rich have butlers and no friends,
And we have friends and no butlers.
Come let us pity the married and the unmarried.

Dawn enters with little feet
like a gilded Pavlova,
And I am near my desire.
Nor has life in it aught better
Than this hour of clear coolness,
the hour of waking together.

The basiji of Iran

All my life I been having nightmares about clashing in the streets with the police of a violent policial state.
I was born in Portugal during the fascist years and that regime lasted till I was fourteen years old.
While there's been a general cleanup of memories, like we were all a big happy family, there were several wars going on in the then Portuguese African colonies and repression was a reality here in the European siege of the Empire, like the regime liked to say.
So I guess those nightmares come from feelings I must have felt early on my life, stories I've been told. I guess I identify very much with the people of Iran and China, but all State brutality worries me and it happens all the time, everywhere - thank God Bush is gone, they were complete paranoids, Bushites and were trying to convince all the Ocidental world to outsource security to Halliburton...

boom or bust

the world made us, life made us, I don't know, it's just that we don't know how to fail, always we have to attain our goals, that's how they wired us : we have to succeed or crash...it's either boom or bust, no compromises.
