Maximizing shareholder value is the central disease of our time
“This is the greatest fallacy I think I know, when nothing in nature suggests anything can grow forever, the American corporation is dedicated to a profit statement this quarter larger than the last. . . . Even as I repeat it, it sounds just ruinous.”
Of course, this relentless pursuit of profit stems in large measure from the fact that, over the past 30 years, companies have embraced an ethos of “maximizing shareholder value.” Says Lear: “I think of it as the central disease of our time.”

Facetime with Cindy Sherman
“I actually hate the idea of selfies,” says Cindy Sherman while discussing recent images she has been making with her iPhone. “People say”—she adopts a naive tone—“ ‘Oh, but you’re, like, the queen of selfies,’ ” and then her voice goes flat. “I really kind of cringe at that thought.”

"A Crush For Solange (And Besides, The Coolest Girl In Cape Town)
Artist and Film Student, Cape Town
Artist and Film Student, Cape Town
Hailed by Vogue as the coolest girl in Cape Town, the 20-year-old South African artist Tony Gum is hitting all the right notes. She is an ‘Instagram Art Star’, posting her eye-catching photographs on her news feed, thus using it as her own art gallery. Her trademark pastel colours, bold American sportswear and red lipstick on her feed has got us hooked, not to mention her work of Cindy Sherman-like self-portraits. Inspired by culture, religion, film and more importantly director Wes Anderson, she recreates classic branded advertisements for present times."
