Silence

Silence
by D. H. Lawrence

Since I lost you I am silence-haunted,
Sounds wave their little wings
A moment, then in weariness settle
On the flood that soundless swings.

Whether the people in the street
Like pattering ripples go by,
Or whether the theatre sighs and sighs
With a loud, hoarse sigh:

Or the wind shakes a ravel of light
Over the dead-black river,
Or night’s last echoing
Makes the daybreak shiver:

I feel the silence waiting
To take them all up again
In its vast completeness, enfolding
The sound of men.

Still

Clyfford Still (November 30, 1904 - June 23, 1980) was an American artist, a painter, and one of the leading figures in Abstract Expressionism. Still was one of the foremost "color field" painters - his paintings are non-objective, and largely concerned with arranging a variety of colors in different formations. However, while Mark Rothko or Barnett Newman organized their colors in a relatively simple way (Rothko in the form of nebulous rectangles, Newman in thin lines on vast fields of color), Still's arrangements are less regular. His jagged flashes of color give the impression that one layer of color has been "torn" off the painting, revealing the colors underneath. Read more in the biography

LETTER TO MY CHILDREN ON GOYA’S EXECUTIONS OF THE THIRD OF MAY
I don’t know, children, what world will be yours. It’s possible (everything’s possible) that it will be the world I wish for you. A simple world,in which the only difficulty will come from there being nothing that’s not simple and natural.A world in which everything will be allowed, according to your fancy, your yearning, your pleasure, your respect for others and their respect for you. It’s also possible that it won’t be this, and that this won’t even be what you want in life. Everything’s possible, even though we fight, as we must fight,on behalf of our idea of freedom and justice and – still more important – in steadfast allegiance to the honour of being alive. One day you will realize what a vast multitude,as countless as humanity, felt this way, loving others for whatever they had that was unique, unusual, free, different, and they were sacrificed, tortured, beaten and hypocritically handed over to secular justice,to be liquidated “with sovereign pity and without bloodshed”.For being loyal to a god, to a conviction,to a country, to a hope, or merely to the irrefutable hunger that gnawed them from within, they were gutted, flayed, burned, gassed, and their bodies heaped up as anonymously as they had lived,or their ashes scattered so that no memory of them remained.Sometimes, for belonging to a certain race or class, they atoned for all the wrongs they had not committed or had no awareness of having committed. But it also happened and happens that they were not killed. There have always been infinite methods for dominating, annihilating quietly, gently, through ways inscrutable, as they say of God’s ways. These executions, this heroism, this horror, was one episode, among thousands, that happened in Spain over a century ago and whose violence and injustice shocked the heart of a painter named Goya, who had a very large heart, full of rage and love. But this is nothing, children, just one event, a brief event,in this chain of which you are (or aren’t) a link of iron and sweat and blood and a bit of semen on the way to the world I dream for you.Believe me that no world, that nothing and nobody is worth more than a life or the joy of having life.It is this joy that matters most.Believe me that the dignity you’ll hear so much about is nothing but this joy that comes from being alive and knowing that no one has ever been less alive or suffered or died so that just one of you could stave off a little longer the death that belongs to all of us and will come. That you will know all of this with peace of mind, with rancour toward no one, without fear, without ambition, and above all without apathy or indifference is my ardent hope. So much blood,so much pain, so much anguish, must one day prove– even if the tedium of a happy world torments you –not to have been in vain. I confess that very often, thinking about the horror of so many centuries of oppression and cruelty, I have a moment of hesitation in which an overwhelming bitterness makes me despair. Are they or aren’t they in vain? And even if they aren’t,who will resurrect those millions, who will restore not only their lives but all that was taken from them? No Final Judgement, children, can give them that moment they did not live, that object they did not freely enjoy, that gesture of love they were going to make ‘tomorrow’.And so the same world we create urges us to treat it with care, as something that isn’t just ours but has been entrusted to us that we might respectfully watch over it in memory of the blood that flows in our veins, and of the flesh we’ve inherited, and of the love that others did not love because it was taken from them.

Europa ?

Something to worry about : lots of decision power was moved to supranational institutions and citizens seem completely oblivious of the fact, indifferent to it and when interested and involved many are against the existing status quo…
European Union commissionaires seem distant and out of synch with the real world, the democracy of their election seems questionable, even the architecture of the Union, its real powers and responsibilities, all its institutions are not clear and known by the citizens.
The Central European Bank looks like an always late, sheepish follower of the Fed...
This next European election can act like a depressant on an already bad outlook.

Factory

Years ago I read, something about the photographer Duane Michals, who happens to be a cousin of Andy Warhol(their families were both from former Checoslovaquia), and he was saying that when he was young he was sent some holidays to a farm on the countryside, and every night in the dark, he would be thinking of how much nicer, was the suburb where he lived, by the noise and yellow lights of the big factories, where his father worked.
I felt completely identified with him, because I grew up like in such a place, by the lights and rumor of a big factory, that also kept my dad away from home most nights.
You never felt lonely though...

Politica

Universal truths

Polly Toynbee in the Guardian, talking about a Bristish banker...why does it sound so familiar, so close to home ?

"He just doesn't get it, and why should he? It's not his fault, it's a bad upbringing among grab-what-you-can and eat-what-you-kill predators. His feral overclass thinks it owes nothing to society: the notion of citizenship is incomprehensibly alien. You could write a "Gee, Officer Krupke" song about him: it's not his fault, he has a social disease. Like the smirking hoodie who sticks one finger up at the judge's sermon on antisocial behaviour, Sir Fred is a product of Britain's winner-takes-all culture that Labour never attempted to civilise. The two extremes here in Europe's most unequal country mirror one another in the social dysfunction they cause. Sir Fred's mob thieves from fellow citizens and their pension funds by avoiding tax and snatching monstrous "remuneration" instead of mugging and looting, but "everyone does it" is how they would each explain their milieu."

Tempted by the fruit of another...

Today I woke up with this song in my head...What's it story ? How the guys who created it decided on doing it this way ?
If I had a go at creating a TV show, I would do the archaeology of music pieces, like this song : "tempted, by the fruit of another...".
Great lines in pop songs...lifesavers all.

Easter in Newark

“Got to take care of our own, it’s how we survive.”

Everyday more Portuguese are forced to emigrate to earn their lives…It has been a constant in our History and so is now. My direct family contributes with one of my brothers, soon another one will go too and several cousins.
Portugal has always been too poor to support all of us, when the Estado Novo regime crashed in the seventies of last century, everybody thought, at least for a brief utopian, noisy, messy while that this could be changed and Portugal would be the coronation of all the sixties revolutions and hopes.
Reality soon set in and the country started slowly to adapt to “normalidade”(normality) and with the signing into the European Union in the eighties, this accelerated even more. Now we have come a long way from where we were on the seventies, but still, we are not a more fair, a more balanced country.
Opportunity just doesn’t knock the same way at every door and the Sun doesn’t shine the same way to all the children of the land.
At the same time, there's an opposite phenomena, being part of the European Union we attract thousands of others who want to enter Europe and access its riches, also we are becoming an elderly people with a low fertility rate, emigrants are our way of renewing the social tissue, not counting the added value to our pension system and the cheap labor force they constitute. Being the destination port of thousands of people coming back from Africa after Portuguese decolonization in the late seventies of the XXth century, we also have a lot of second generation, local born African descendants.
Will we be able to use all this forces to forge a new country? will we use all this connections in the right way? can we face prejudice and overcome it – even the well established one, that we Portuguese don’t harbor no prejudices…Africa, Latin America and Asia, are emerging and some of its countries are becoming major players in world affairs, we have been there, we have dealt with those peoples for centuries can we still do it now ? Can we function as a link between all this interests and the interests of the West that we are part ?

Verdade e parábola

Encontrei esta parábola na Net(Have I been telling you lately, what a marvellous thing the net is ?)

A Parábola perguntou-lhe: “Diz-me amiga, o que te faz andar tão triste?”

Common sense, I guess...

Ted Kooser "Selecting A Reader"

First, I would have her be beautiful,
and walking carefully up on my poetry
at the loneliest moment of an afternoon,
her hair still damp at the neck
from washing it. She should be wearing
a raincoat, an old one, dirty
from not having money enough for the cleaners.
She will take out her glasses, and there
in the bookstore, she will thumb
over my poems, then put the book back
up on its shelf. She will say to herself,
"For that kind of money, I can get
my raincoat cleaned." And she will.

Looking for traces of us in the old wall,
