    The Woman and the Roses

    "Marc Chagall was born in a small town in Russia, and though he was inspired by avant-garde painting in Paris, his work retained references to the folklore and landscape of his homeland. As if illustrating a dream, this painting depicts a vase of exuberant red roses through which float a half-moon, white clouds, and a reclining image of Chagall´s wife, Bella. Behind the vase hovers a remembered view of his hometown, Vitebsk. The poet and critic Guillaume Apollinaire described Chagall´s paintings as 'supernatural.'"
